Secretary of State John F. Kerry on Monday paid what he called a “gut-wrenching” visit to a memorial in Hiroshima, the Japanese city hit by a nuclear bomb seven decades ago, killing as many as 140,000 people. The attack on Hiroshima, followed three days later by the bombing of Nagasaki, signaled the first and last time that nuclear weapons were used in a time of war.
Kerry was part of a delegation of foreign ministers at a two-day meeting of the Group of Seven bloc of nations. Ahead of the visit, it was made clear that the U.S. secretary of state would not be specifically apologizing for the destruction of these two cities, which led to the end of World War II. Rather, both senior U.S. and Japanese officials emphasized the need to look not to the past, but to the future.

On this issue, China is correct. Kerry is merely continuing the Obama worldwide @$$ kissing tour begun on his first trip as President.

As crude as it sounds, what the Chinese say or the CCP’s declaration, the US also must never apologize for the nuclear bombs dropped in Japan. Without the nuclear weapons, the US and its allies against japan, could have lost as many or more lives as what they have lost already in order to bring Japan to surrender. The Japanese must always remember their samurai’s deranged toughness and the crimes they caused and committed are sealed in history.

The Japanese were warned ahead of time of the dropping of the bomb’s, but they ignored these warnings. Unlike the warning we had about Pearl Harbor!

Excuse me, who started the war!

Essentially we did. We stopped supplying fuel to the japanese war effort, thus harming it indefinitely.
War was definite at that point, wait for the japanese attacksm on the pacific (pearl harbor) and the sinking of an american curise ship by a german u-boat. To sway the public and turn America into a huge war machine.
But of course not we shouldn’t apologize for the bombings. I mean god damn are we getting this soft? This is coming from an era where a whole nation of people that their nation’s leader was a God, lived with samurai military traditions, and had suicide units.
It would be as if germany would be asking us, western europe, and russia for an apology for bombing and invading berlin.

Apology for Hiroshima, not for Nanjing? What is the apology for when killing has been the norm in all wars of human history? The more people you could wipe off the more heroic you would be.

By not apologizing for the atomic bombing Kerry told Japan that the atomic bombing is the right approach for ending the war and that his visit told the deaths they are the punhishment for Japan starting the Asia WWII, contrary to what Abe expects.

  • Joe1002

Apologize? are you nuts I say we should have dropped a third bomb instead of wasting it on a test!!!I am saying this from the point of view of one whose family lived through the Japanese occupation.

The more china’s propaganda department blabbers on and on, the less anyone really pays attention to anything they say. The media from china makes the country look backward and like a sniveling fool. We all know that Xinhua is just pure propaganda and it deserves to crumble as a propaganda mouthpiece.

How do you know that “china’s propaganda department blabbers on and on”? Perhaps you believe so due to the US media propaganda.

  • GRBear

Contrasting the dogged Japanese refusal to apologize for its war crimes with the German willingness & sincerity in doing so, one concludes that there is really no need to apologize for the bomb.

  • pga6

    No apologies made; none deserved.
I find it an oddity, because of the power in single bombs, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are considered heinous. Meanwhile, the firebombing of Tokyo – possibly the largest single loss of life in one night in the history of warfare – is little more than a footnote except to historians.

  • J Q Public

China has better sense than the US on US Foreign Policy? Talk about an oddity.
The Japanese committed a boatload of atrocities during WWII include rape and slaughter. The Nuclear Bomb was on many levels justified on different levels. Yes, you can be snarky and say ‘it was just a demonstration of power to the Soviets’, which is was, but to say it didn’t end the war and prevent the deaths of hundreds of thousands is ignorance.

China and the Soviet Union were the great battlegrounds of the Second World War. Why aren’t more people aware of their contribution? The Chinese Civil War started in 1927 and ended in 1949 when the Nationalist Army fled to Taiwan. With the Xian Incident both sides suspended the Civil War in 1937 sort of. The Nationalist possessed a conventional army and the Communists ran a guerilla campaign. All the heavy fighting was done by the Nationalists. Later what could Mao do but maintain his silence?

To clarify a few points, the U.S. was by no means certain that the atomic bombs would cause Japan to surrender. The plans for the invasion of the home islands continued. What the allies weren’t aware of was that Japan had stored weapons and supplies to use against the expected allied invasion. (Research the Japanese plan “ketsu-go”) in the hope of getting the allies to sue for peace and avoid an occupation. In the words of one Allied interrogator, “these guys had us figured out”. It would have been a horrendous blood bath for both sides. At least one million allied casualties and several million Japanese would have paid the price for Tokyo’s folly. So, despite the horror of the atomic bombs, they actually saved many more lives than they took. All because the Emperor believed what his military government was telling him.

Your statement that Pearl Harbor “…provoked the United States into joining the global conflict with the assault on Pearl Harbor in 1941” is not exactly correct.
    1) The Japanese attacked the US fleet at Pearl Harbor on Dev 7, 1941 without warning.
    2) The following day, the US declared war on Japan.
    3) One or two days later, Germany declared war on the US.
    4) One or two days later, the US declared war on Germany.
Up until several days before all this, the US population was generally “isolationist”. According to most historians, they would not likely have supported war against Germany had Germany not declared war on us.
Yes, this may seem picky. However, consider that a large percentage of American high school students believe that the attack on Pearl Harbor was an American attack on Pearl Harbor, Vietnam and which started the Vietnam War. And these also believe that Hitler was our ally against the Soviet Union in WWII.

  • Daedalus

Japan entered the Tripartite Pact in 1940. Hitler’s government could do little else. Anyway they were sure the brunt of the American attack would be Japan not Europe.

    —————————————-

    dcc1968

In Shirer and others, Hitler is described as being frantic that the US would declare war on Germany before he could declare war on us, as wanted credit for starting the war with us. The language of the Pact I’ve read did not require Hitler to declare war on the US, and Japan’s attack was not approved by Germany beforehand as I remember reading. Germany was at war with the Soviet Union, but Japan was at peace with the USSR until at least August 1945.

The Second Sino-Japanese War began in 1937 and merged with the other conflicts into the Second World War. Over 300,000- people were killed during the Rape of Nanking. Once Germany fell it made sense to end the war asap. With Hiroshima and Nagasaki it became evident the full impact of technology on war. It made killing so much easier that it must be avoided at all cost.

Everyone do some math and come to their own conclusions about whether or not it was wrong for the US to shorten the war. Take into account the projected casualties among Japanese civilians if it had been necessary for Allied forces to invade the country. Also please do remember the in tact presence in China of major well armed Japanese armies who were still destroying and murdering, even as the US dropped the bombs. Don’t leave out the Japanese units that began slaughtering POWs, as the Allies got closer. I hope the Secretary of State and President will also visit Nanjing where the Japanese, overseen by the Emperor’s brother, did not wait for high tech means, but slaughtered 400,000 by hand, which is more, by the way, than those who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.

  • Daedalus

I hope so too. China’s refusal to surrender kept Japan’s forces pinned in China.
