Democracy is a joke, says China – just look at Donald Trump

When there is upheaval within China’s own borders – riots, protests, vicious political power struggles – hardly a sniff of it will be found in the pages of the country’s heavily-controlled press.
When it happens elsewhere – and particularly when it underscores the perils and pitfalls of democracy – it becomes front-page news.
Such is the case of Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, who, for China’s authoritarian rulers, has become the latest example of how allowing the masses a say in choosing their leaders is a bad idea.
“The rise of a racist in the US political area worries the whole world,” the party-controlled Global Times crowed this week ahead of of Trump’s victory in the latest round of primaries. “He has even been called another Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler by some western media.”
It added, darkly: “Mussolini and Hitler came to power through elections, a heavy lesson for western democracy.”
Trump, or “Chuanpu” as they call him in China, has been a gift to Communist party spin doctors paid to convince the country’s 1.4 billion citizens that rule of the people is a sure path to chaos and destruction.

Mussolini and Hitler came to power via elections – and then got rid of elections.Mao and Stalin didn’t come to power via elections. It’s not elections which cause mass deaths, destruction and war.

  • ecologic

This is rich coming from a country that massacred its own people in living memory and was run by a mad man who responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people.

  • Howling

It’s difficult to disagree with a single word they’re saying

  • trevorgleet

…perfect ammunition for the rulers of one-party China to argue that democracy was bad not just for it but for the world. “It produces buffoons. It’s carnivalesque. It is decadent,” Bisley says.Reagan. Bush. Bush. Trump? They have a point.

I am not sure that is exactly what the Chinese government said.Totally ignoring Chinese sentiment on the concept of voting in a government, I have been thinking for awhile now that we are more focused on democracy than on freedom and in fact tend to use the words interchangeably. You can have democracy but not freedom. Should Corbyn or Trump get elected, you will know what I mean. The last 50 years have seen the shackles our forebears have put on government been eroded and finally broken to the situation we have now where government/politicians are able to interfere/shape our individual lives in a way that George III would never have considered.Corporatism is now the bedfellow of big government, which is curtailing individual freedom and liberty more and more. The freedom to succeed (and fail) on one’s own merit is to me more important than democracy.

Racism among the “foreign devils”? Dunno where to begin in this circle of irony…

If Donald Trump is a joke, it’s not a very funny one.

It’s like the prospect of Britain electing Roy Chubby Brown as PM.

We need to shift the conversation away from ‘the problem with democracy’ to ‘the problem with corporations buying election campaigns’.The US is a failed democracy- the President of the States is a puppet for the corporates. Until the people reclaim the political process, we are going to see these idiots rise.Besides, let’s be honest, the US is a military state (which it has exported around the world) with it’s people living under surveillance by the state.Land of the free? Only in the storybooks…

    ——————————————

    Craig Riley

I wouldn’t say military state per se. More like an oligarchy which has an economic dependence on war and turmoil.

In the West we an get rid of our clowns. In China they are stuck with their (grimly unfunny)

  • FinMtl

Regardless of who is president a China – U.S. showdown is on the cards in the next 30 years. As the Chinese get richer and more powerful eventually they will make a move in the Pacific that will lead to a skirmish that might lead to war.

  • Petepetepete

Protectionism could be very interesting for the US. It’s quite a difficult position for Clinton to argue against – not least because the return of American manufacturing will be largely automated and far more environmentally friendly. Trump gets to sound like he’s pro-blue collar jobs when that’s not what he’s talking about at all.

  • BetterandBetter

    He hasn’t been elected yet.

But almost half of U.S supports and this is important.

  • ermagerd

They have a point but their credibility is somewhat undermined on account of their country being an authoritarian sh*t-hole.I know they’re George Osborne’s new bestest friends and Jeremy Hunt thinks we should be more like them but they can both f*ck off and we have that option to make them do that – because of democracy.

  • sanogo

Find it funny how we lampoon Trump in this country yet we have “Call Me Dave” and UNI BANTA LADBIBLE BORIS running around and people seem to be fine about this.

  • GrumpyOldDog

China’s leaders are not the only ones wanting to laugh at the joke that it American democracy and the caliber of the super-rich conservative maniacs that seek to be the next POTUS. But what is happening now in America is no joke – it is a democratic disaster which, if not stopped in its tracks, will escalate into a global tragedy of hate, fear and conflict.Whatever the deficiencies in the American democratic system, electing Trump will create far worse problems, both inside and outside the borders of the USA.Just don’t do it – elect Donald Duck or Goofy as POTUS, but not Donald Trump!

  • TristanR

The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter. The best argument against anything else is one look at China.

  • ClareLondon

Horrible country speaks some truth for once.Pretty much on the button with this one.Now all I’ve got to do is ‘pray’ (metaphorically speaking) that US undecided voters will listen and learn what the clown with a comb over would mean for the dignity of the USA in world affairs.

The thing is they are going to be presented with a choice between Trump or Clinton, that’s like having to choose between AIDS or cancer.

And vote for warmongering Hilary instead.
    Hobson’s Choice.

    You are joking, right?
    Not being serious?
    Taking the piss???
Hobson’s Choice between Trump and Clinton???
Have you had your sanity checked recently?

Am I the only one to spot the irony of a foreign corrrespondent posting a piece critical of Chinese free speech from Beijing?

  • coplani

For lessons to be learned from history…..See Boris Yeltsin….
Much of the Yeltsin era was marked by widespread corruption, and as a result of persistent low oil and commodity prices during the 1990s, Russia suffered inflation, economic collapse and enormous political and social problems that affected Russia and the other former states of the USSR.
Will America go the same way, one wonders, when one sees some Presidential candidates….
